Since children and grown-ups live in the same world, Artemis plays deal with the world of the child as well as that of the adult. The theatre is a place where children and adults can be treated as equals, where childlike trains of thought can go hand in hand with sophisticated ways of visualising and telling a story. Artemis plays are associative and act as triggers to set up a dialogue between young and old.
dealing with things that matter
Theater Artemis makes performances for a range of age groups. From its home base in Den Bosch, in the South of the Netherlands, Artemis presents its performances in the theatres as well as on location, across the Netherlands and Belgium and at international festivals.
Since its foundation in 1990, Artemis has become one of the Netherlands’ leading youth theatre companies. With the arrival of artistic director Floor Huygen, in 2005, the company expanded its artistic horizon. With this new course, our aim became to reach audiences of both children and grown-ups. Due to health problems Floor was forced to resign from her duties in 2012. In February 2013 Artemis found her successor in Jetse Batelaan. The 2013/14 season is promising to be unique, therefore, with Artemis presenting shows representing the ideas of two different artistic directors.
Every year Theater Artemis produces 2 to 4 new plays aimed at varying age groups ranging from 6 to 15. Often we will also restage at least one successful production from our past. Artemis plays a total of 120 - 150 performances in the Netherlands, Flanders, and further afield. Artemis receives long-term financial support from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the Province of Noord-Brabant and the City of ’s-Hertogenbosch.
