dealing with things that matter
Theater Artemis produces performances for a range of age groups. From its home base in Den Bosch, in the South of the Netherlands, Artemis presents its performances in the theatres as well as on location, across the Netherlands and Belgium and at international festivals. Since its foundation in 1990, Artemis has become one of the Netherlands’ leading youth theatre companies. With the arrival of artistic director Floor Huygen, in 2005, the company has expanded its artistic horizon. With this new course, our aim is to reach audiences of both children and grown-ups.
Artemis has taken up position right in the heart of life. What is on people’s minds? The starting point is always an existential issue; a performance should always deal with things that matter. We take a traditional approach to creating our plays which results in drama with a great sense of immediacy: one human being against another, really seeing what is in front of you, really hearing something, being somewhere. Humanity is what is at stake and humanity is our chosen subject.
As elementary as children can be; this is the kind of performance Artemis wants to create. Children and grown-ups have a lot to offer each other. And yet they often live in quite separate worlds. With its performances on subjects that fascinate and engage people of different age groups for different reasons, Artemis manages to unite children and grown-ups time and again, allowing them to experience and share the things they may not immediately understand.
To us, the one ingredient of a performance that we absolutely cannot do without is good acting. That is why we work with the very best actors, whether they are up-and-coming young talents or celebrated and established actors. Our actors, directors and designers keep coming back in familiar and therefore fruitful constellations to work on new chapters that will appeal to audiences of all ages, making an essential contribution to the performances-for-many-age-groups that we want to create.
Right from the start, the company has been working on a substantial repertoire for many ages by commissioning new plays. Some of these will start from interviews or improvisations. Lately, Artemis has begun exploring the literary canon and the existing dramatic repertoire. Wuthering Heights (2009) was a first, instantly successful, step in this direction. In 2010 the performance received both a Silver and a Gold Cricket award (for best stage performance and best production for children and young people), and it was selected for the Nederlands Theater Festival as one of the ten highlights of the season. And sometimes we will depart from a contemporary repertoire piece; for our twentieth anniversary, for instance, we created our own version of Arne Sierens’ Mouchette – which was written in the same year as when Artemis was founded.
Every year Theater Artemis produces 2 to 4 new plays aimed at varying age groups ranging from 6 to 15. And often we will also restage at least one successful production from our past. Artemis plays a total of 120 - 150 performances in the Netherlands, Flanders, and further afield. Artemis receives long-term financial support from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the Province of Noord-Brabant and the City of ’s-Hertogenbosch.
